The Nigerian government is considering morning and afternoon classes for pupils across the country as the Federal Government works towards reopening schools.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during the presidential task force briefing, Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, said that the Federal Government might adopt a two-shift system of morning and afternoon classes in order to reduce population of pupils and students and  ease the burden on infrastructure.

“We may have classes in the morning and classes in the afternoon so that we will have the whole of the infrastructure divided, provided they can serve us. I am not sure we will have classes at night. But we can do with morning and afternoon for now.”

He said there would be a publication on government’s specific expectation during COVID-19 for everyone to know what going to school would look like, adding that everyone is expected to adapt.

He said, “Until we are sure that children can go to school, return safely and not be infected  with  COVID-19 or  infect people who are more susceptible than they are,  we run a big risk if something happens to our children, God forbid, in our hurry to reopen schools.  I am not sure how anybody will be able to retrieve what has been lost.”

According to him, Nigeria has over 115,000 primary schools and  35,000 of this figure are private, hence the need for private schools to set up the same standard  to allow children to go in.

He, however, denied reports that schools will be reopened  on June 8, noting that  the Federal Government will consult experts and the World Health Organisation (WHO) before taking a final decision on the reopening of schools.
