Address Industrial Actions, Poor Work Ethics, Tinubu Tells ASUU

In an effort to address bad work ethics and industrial strikes in the universities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday asked labour unions in the Nigerian university system to exert every effort.

 

Tinubu who called on the trade unions to confront the issues warned that if they went unchecked, the calibre of university academic programmes would suffer the burnt.

This was as he expressed his administration’s concern to exert peace and harmony among the workforce at the universities, urging the unions to uphold these values.

The President made the call while speaking at the University of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, during the 7th and 8th joint convocation of the institution.

Represented by Professor Charles Igwe, Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), President Tinubu urged labour groups and unions to confront unethical behaviour in the workplace and refrain from taking strikes that would jeopardise educational initiatives.

While admitting that there would be temporary difficulties, he used the necessity to solve economic issues and absurdities such as exporting crude oil but importing refined petroleum products to support his decision to eliminate gasoline subsidies.

 

Professor Sunday Elom, the Vice Chancellor, praised the President for his attempts to realign the university system by implementing measures like the Safe School Initiative, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, and IPPIS exemption.
