Exclusive: Online teaching: At last, Nigeria’s vice chancellors take step to address challenges

As  universities  in Nigeria continue to struggle in their  bid to shift  their teachings  online in response to school closure due to  COVID-19 pandemic,  the Committee of Vice-Chancellors  of Nigerian Universities  has  moved  to finding a probable solution to the challenges militating against online education.

The vice chancellors are organising a webinar for ICT directorates in Nigerian universities, where both the immediate and lingering challenges to online delivery are to  be discussed and addressed.

The notice of the webinar, exclusively obtained by franktalknow.com, indicated that the key talking point would be on fostering transition to multiple modes of academic engagement.  All the ICT directorates in the universities are also expected to present the practical challenges confronting them with a view to providing practical solutions to them.

Lead speaker at the Webinar is a professor of computer science and Vice Chancellor, Trinity University, Prof Charles Ayo while Prof Tanko Ishaya of the University of Jos and some directors of ICT departments in selected Nigerian universities will also speak.  The Secretary General of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Prof Yakubu Ochefu, is expected to host the webinar taking place this Wednesday.

The webinar, according to the notice, will also dwell on the best practice for managing and securing campus wide area networks; broad band connectivity and Last Mile Solutions as well as getting reliable and affordable data to the end users, It will also touch on the relationship between ICT Vendors/Solutions providers and university ICT directorates and examine the readiness of ICT policies of Nigerian universities post-COVID-19.

Participants are expected to be able to understand the various online learning delivery approaches and how they may be adopted by universities; identify the issues of best practices and challenges for implementing ICT policies; and determine the various quality dimensions for online education in the specific context of their institutions.

It is also believed that at the end of the day, the participants would be able to comprehend the various existing frameworks and models for deploying ICT platforms in Nigeria and articulate strategies and policies to support the implementation of current and near future online education.
