An Ilorin magistrates’ court has ordered the remand of a suspected kidnapper, Aliyu Usman, a 20-year-old herder, who was arraigned for criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and kidnapping.
The offences contravene Section 97 of the penal code, Section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (special provision) Act and Section 15 of the Kwara State Prohibition of Kidnapping Law 2010.
According to the police report, Usman was arrested upon a complaint made by one Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Sani.
Sani said he and two others were attacked by armed men while returning from a business trip to Benin Republic at Yashikira in Kwara State.
He said the suspects robbed them of their belongings including his Itel phone and some cash before they abducted one Alhaji Lawali Hamisu to an unknown destination.
“The attackers placed a call through the victim’s phone demanding a ransom of N9m which resulted in the payment of N3m to secure his release,” the report explained.
Usman was later arrested and he confessed to having conspired with one Manu Usman, Abdullahi Gajere and four others all of whom are still at large.
Usman admitted to collecting over ₦600,000 from the other suspects but denied being part of the kidnapping scheme.
“They only gave me the money as a gift to improve my cattle business,” he said.
The prosecutor, Sanni Abdullahi, urged the court to remand the suspect in the federal correctional centre owing to the severity of the alleged offences.
The presiding magistrate, Ibrahim Mohammed, obliged the plea of the prosecutor and ordered the remand of the suspect in prison.
He adjourned the matter till January 10, 2022, for further mention.
