The Kogi State Government clashed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) last week, accusing the agency of harboring a political agenda against former Governor Yahaya Bello. In a fiery press release, the state government vehemently denied the EFCC’s recent charges against Bello, alleging they were fabricated and politically motivated.

The controversy stems from the EFCC’s inclusion of Bello in an amended charge sheet, accusing him of conspiring to divert state funds months before he even assumed office in 2015. The Kogi government called this accusation “laughable” and “ridiculous,” emphasizing that Bello couldn’t have committed the alleged offense before becoming governor.

The statement went further, suggesting the EFCC was being manipulated by “rogues masquerading as politicians” to tarnish Bello’s image for their own gain. It criticized the EFCC’s leadership and urged President Tinubu to intervene and protect the agency’s integrity from such external influences.

This isn’t the first time the Kogi government has locked horns with the EFCC. The statement recalled previous instances where the anti-corruption agency made “false accusations” about the state’s finances, including a fabricated account holding N20 billion. The Kogi government accused the EFCC of pressuring other institutions to support their claims and refusing to apologize for the errors.

The statement also mentioned similar accusations against former First Lady Rashida Bello, claiming she was labeled a fugitive without proper investigation.

Determined to fight back, the Kogi government declared its intention to challenge the charges in court and urged its citizens to remain calm despite what they termed “relentless provocation” from the EFCC
