The Ojo family of Bariga in Lagos is grappling with the loss of  hardworking Bunmi Ojo, and an overwhelming medical debt that has followed.

Bunmi, 50, succumbed to injuries sustained in a bus accident on December 23rd and was pronounced dead a few days later at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

Despite the generous contributions of N1,100,000 from church members and sympathisers, the family is still confronted with an outstanding N3,740,000 medical bill. Bunmi, a revered member of the Bariga community, was known for her unwavering commitment to her family and her benevolent spirit.

Her husband, a gate man residing with their three teenage children in a modest one-room apartment, is faced with the impossibility of settling the staggering sum on his meagre income.

The family’s plight is compounded by the hospital’s policy, which prevents them from claiming Bunmi’s body for burial until the debt is cleared.

In a plea for compassion, the family has reached out to the Lagos State Ministry of Health, seeking an exemption in light of Bunmi’s contributions to her community and the dire financial straits they find themselves in.

They hope for the ministry’s intervention to facilitate a dignified burial for a woman who spent her life caring for others, including the elderly in her church, her own parents, and anyone in need despite her limited means.

The Ojo family’s appeal to the authorities is not just for their own relief but also calls attention to the need for a more compassionate healthcare system that does not leave the most vulnerable behind.
