Reps Launch Probe into Fuel Quality, Refinery Operations

The House of Representatives has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the crude oil supply chain, quality of petroleum products imported and refined in Nigeria, and the operations of local refineries.

According to the Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikenga Ugochinyere, the investigation will involve detailed laboratory tests at local refineries, marketers, importers, and regulatory agencies like the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Ugochinyere stated, “We will visit various filling stations, depots, and tank farms to verify the quality of imported petroleum products and assess the testing capacity of all refineries.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the significance of the investigation, saying, “The Nigerian petroleum industry has witnessed a total overhaul with the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act.

The investigation will proceed in phases, beginning with an examination of standards of petroleum products imported into the country and the crude oil supply chain.
