The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commended the Federal Government and 23 states for implementing the new retirement age for teachers.

In 2020, former President Muhammadu Buhari announced the increase in retirement age from 60 to 65 years.

NUT President, Titus Amba, expressed satisfaction with the development, urging the remaining states to follow suit.

“We are pleased to note that 23 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Federal Government have implemented the new retirement age for their teachers,” Amba said.

He emphasized that this move would allow schools to benefit from experienced teachers and address manpower challenges.

The NUT also highlighted concerns about the non-declaration of vacancies and stagnation of teachers’ career progression in Unity Schools. Amba stressed that teachers deserve encouragement and unhindered career progression.
