As the deployment of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) application that can compose essays, create art, engage in philosophical conversations, and write computer code for specific tasks, continues to gain popularity, many are questioning the future of AI in education and various industries.

Experts, educationists, and students alike have shared their views and predictions on whether AI will replace human beings in the future.

One of the major concerns is whether AI will replace or stunt human intellect and critical thinking.

While AI can perform tasks efficiently and accurately, it lacks the ability to think creatively and critically like humans.

This could lead to a decrease in the value of human intelligence and skills.Another concern is whether cheating will become more prevalent with the use of AI.

With the ability to create grade-passing essays and complete tasks without human intervention, students may be tempted to rely on AI instead of developing their own skills and knowledge.

Despite the potential drawbacks, AI has the potential to revolutionize education and various industries. It can provide personalized learning experiences, automate repetitive tasks, and improve efficiency.

However, it is important to ensure that AI is used as a tool to enhance human capabilities rather than replace them entirely. In the field of education, the downside of relying too heavily on AI is that students may not be developing their writing skills or critical thinking abilities.

It is important to strike a balance between using AI as a tool and ensuring that students are still actively engaged in the learning process.

As AI continues to advance and become more prevalent in various industries, it is important to consider the potential impact on human skills and abilities.

McKinsey global institute says that at the global average level of adoption and absorption and advances in ai implied by their simulation, AI has the profound impact to deliver additional global economic activity of around $13 trillion in the foreseeable future and by 2030, or about 16% higher cumulative GDP compared with today. This amounts to 1.2% additional GDP growth per year. If delivered, this impact would compare well with that of other general-purpose technologies through history. This will mainly come from substitution of labor by automation and increased innovation in products and services.

According to Philip Torr, professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, the fallibility of AI tools – driven not by emotion, but by data and algorithms – means that the presence of humans in the workplace will remain essential.

“Industrial revolutions in the past have typically led to more employment, not less,” says Torr. “I think that we’ll see the types of jobs changing, but that’s just a natural progression.”

Torr, an award-winning research fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in London, compares the impact of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT to the advent of the word processor: an extremely useful tool that will fundamentally change the way we work.

He is generally optimistic that humans can coexist productively alongside such technologies – and he is not alone in this view. Many experts in the field believe that, with the right education and legislation, automation could have a positive impact on the workplace.

In an interview with the Rector of Ogun State Institute of Technology (IGBESA), Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, he said, “AI cannot replace human being, no matter how michtechnology thrives, there will always be a plethora of changes that AI will not be able to do, and of course it is assisting in so many areas.

“The argument is taking too far that Artificial intelligence will replace human being.”

In a media chat with Bolude Bayonle a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, he said, “ I have been using CHAT GPT for various purposes. It has been helpful in generating ideas for essays, providing explanations for complex concepts, and even assisting in brainstorming sessions.

However, I do not believe that CHAT GPT will completely replace humans in the nearest future. While CHAT GPT is an impressive tool, it still has limitations. It lacks the emotional intelligence, empathy, and critical thinking abilities that humans possess.

“Additionally, it may not always provide accurate or reliable information, as it relies on the data it has been trained.

“While CHAT GPT is a valuable tool, I believe that it will complement human involvement rather than replace it entirely. The combination of human expertise and AI technology can lead to more efficient and effective learning experiences.”

Also, Akin Agbeluyi of DS Adegbenro polytechnic in a recent interview, has predicted that AI will eventually replace human beings and take over their jobs in the future.

Agbeluyi believed that the rapid advancements in AI technology will make it possible for machines to perform tasks that were once exclusive to humans.

Agbeluyi explained that AI has already started to replace humans in certain industries, such as manufacturing and customer service. He added that as AI technology continues to improve, it will become more efficient and cost-effective than human labor, leading to widespread job displacement.

Despite the potential negative impact on the workforce, Agbeluyi sees AI as a necessary and inevitable development. He believes that AI will ultimately lead to a more productive and efficient society, as machines will be able to perform tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans.

However, Agbeluyi also emphasized the need for society to prepare for the impact of AI on the workforce.

He suggested that governments and businesses should invest in retraining programs and education to help workers transition to new jobs that cannot be automated.
