JUST IN: Court fines FG N100m for violating Emefiele’s rights

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja pronounced Godwin Emfiele, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,’s lengthy detention without trial to be a gross breach of his fundamental rights.

 

The court also imposed a N100 million fine on the federal government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission.

It also prohibited the FG and its agents from detaining or arresting Emefiele without a court order.

The decision was made in a fundamental human rights claim filed by the former CBN governor after his extended imprisonment in the custody of the Department of State Services.

 

He asked the court to order the respondents to pay him N1bn damages and to restrain them from further arresting and or detaining him.

 

 

Recall that the ex-CBN boss was arrested on June 10 shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.

 

Listed as defendants in the suit were the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation; the EFCC and its chairman.
