Prof Olatunji Emerges ACSPN New President

The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) has elected Professor Rotimi Olatunji as its new President.

Olatunji from the Lagos State University, emerged as the new leader of the association during its 11th Annual Conference and General Meeting held between 3rd and 5th September, 2024.

The conference, which was held at Airport Hotel, Lagos, had the theme “Digital Communication and Governance in Africa” and was attended by academics from across the country.

Other elected executives include Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Deputy President, South West; Prof Ifeyinwa Nsude, Deputy President, South East/South South; and Dr. Rukayyat Aliyu, Deputy President, North.

The association also elected new Vice-Presidents for each region, including Prof. Uwaoma Uche, Vice-President, South East; Mr. Lanre Arogundade, Vice-President, South West; and Prof Peter Esuh, Vice-President, South South.

Dr. Solomon Abiodun Oyeleye was elected as the new General Secretary, while Dr. Faustino Babatunde and Lawal Umar Maradun were elected as Assistant General Secretaries.

The association also elected new Zonal Mobilisation Officers, including Dr. Dare Ogunyombo, South West; Peter Dibia Nnadozie, South East; and Dr. Daniel Ekhareafo, South South.

In the realm of research and publications, Prof. Joe Wilson from Federal University, Kashere has been appointed as the Research & Publications Editor, with Prof. Barigbon Nsereka of Rivers State University and Dr. Olayinka Oyegbile of Double O Communication as Deputy Editors.

Dr. Monday Ashibogwu from Billsbox Limited will lead as the Brand Strategist, while Dr. Chukwudi Anyianuka from the Institute of Management & Technology and Dr. Olabisi Deji-Folutile from Franktalknow Media Limited will serve as Publicity Secretaries.

The Welfare and Logistics team includes Ify Obi from UNZIK and Nurat Tosin Yusuf-Audu from the University of Abuja. The ICT positions are held by Mr. Tosin Adesile of Elizade University and Bashiru Usman of Skyline University.

Anayo Ngene from Braun Memorial Schools is the new Partnership, Networking & Linkages Officer. Diaspora Coordinators include Uchenna Ekwo, PhD from Union College of New Jersey for the USA and Dr. Ekwutosi Sanita Nwakpu from Edge Hill University for Europe and Asia.

Dr. Eric Msughter Aondover from Caleb University will coordinate student activities, supported by Dr. Timothy Ekeledirichukwu Onyejelem from Federal University, Otuoke as Deputy National Students Coordinator.

The Board of Trustees now comprises Prof. Idowu Sobowale as Chairman, Mr. Lanre Idowu as Secretary, and members including Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof. Charles Okigbo, Prof. Umaru Pate, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, Prof. Victor Ayedun-Aluma, Mrs. Nkechi Ali-Balogun, and Prof. Shamsudeen Mohammed. Ex-officio members include Prof. Oluyinka Esan and Prof. Adebayo Fayoyin from the UK.

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso stated that the theme of the conference was timely because it came at a time when the Lagos State Government used digital communication as a pillar in transforming governance by connecting the state with fibre optic cables as part of its smart city project. He said roads in the state were installed with CCTV cameras to control crimes and ease navigations by commuters
