The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that Julius Abure is the legitimate Chairman of the Labour Party.
Justice Emeka Nwite made this declaration on Tuesday, affirming the leadership of the Abure faction and validating the March 2024 Nnewi convention that established the current national leadership.
In a counter-affidavit filed at the Federal High Court, INEC had claimed that the party’s leadership, including Abure, was illegitimate. However, Justice Nwite directed INEC to acknowledge Abure’s authority.
“We only engage with parties that have legitimate leadership in place,” INEC’s legal team argued. However, the court disagreed, stating that the Labour Party’s request for declaratory reliefs was sufficient.
Abure’s faction had accused Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of betrayal. This allegation arose after INEC declared it did not recognise Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
Obiora Ifoh, spokesperson for the Abure-led faction, criticised those advocating for Abure’s ouster. “It’s all lies,” he said.

The court’s ruling is a significant development in the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party. With this declaration, INEC is now expected to recognize Abure as the legitimate Chairman of the party.
