IGP Approves Compensation for Officers Involved in Fatal Accident During Edo Election Duty

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has authorized significant relief funds for police officers involved in a tragic accident on September 24, 2024, while returning from special election duties in Edo State.

The incident, which occurred along the Zaria-Kano Expressway, resulted in the deaths of five officers and left eleven others hospitalized.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP has approved ten million naira (₦10,000,000) for the families of the deceased officers.

Those still receiving medical treatment will be compensated with two million naira (₦2,000,000), while officers who have been discharged after treatment will receive five hundred thousand naira (₦500,000).

Egbetokun emphasized the importance of supporting the families and the injured officers during this difficult time.

He stated, “The Inspector General of Police has taken decisive actions to provide support to those affected, acknowledging their profound loss and ensuring they receive necessary medical care.”

The statement also noted that eight individuals have since been discharged from the hospital, while three remain under treatment.

Egbetokun extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed hope for the speedy recovery of those still hospitalized.
