The House of Representatives on Thursday dismissed a motion calling for federal intervention in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Okpella, Edo State.

The motion, put forth by Mr. Dekeri Anamero, representative for Etsako East/Etsako West, highlighted the escalating violence following the recent crowning of Lukman Akemokue as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella.

During the session, Anamero expressed grave concerns over the loss of lives attributed to unrest triggered by Akemokue’s installation by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

He noted that the community remains divided, with those opposing Akemokue’s selection reacting violently to the Governor’s decision.

Anamero called for immediate action from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to restore order in the troubled community, criticizing Obaseki for proceeding with the installation despite significant public dissent.

“The Governor’s actions reflect a disregard for the community’s sentiments,” he stated.

The motion faced challenges as no member rose to second it, prompting a member of the opposition, Awaji-Inombek Abiante of the Peoples Democratic Party, to question its validity. “If no one is seconding the motion, let it die,” Abiante remarked, highlighting the lack of support for Anamero’s appeal.
