Team faces logistical nightmare ahead of crucial AFCON qualifier against Libya

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have encountered a significant setback after being stranded at Al Abaq Airport in Libya for over four hours following an unexpected flight diversion.

The team, which was traveling for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, saw their plans disrupted when their chartered flight was rerouted from its intended destination of Benghazi.

According to reports from journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had secured prior approval for a direct flight to Benghazi, just a short drive from Benina Airport.

However, just an hour before landing, the aircraft was diverted, forcing the players and officials to face logistical challenges that complicated their travel arrangements.

“The agreement and the approval the NFF got was for the chartered flight to land in Benghazi, a few minutes’ drive to Benina,” Samuel tweeted. “Despite the diversion of the plane, there were no buses provided at the Abraq Airport by the Libyan FA.

The Super Eagles contingent has been stranded for 3+ hours and locked up at the Abraq Airport.”

Defender Tanimu Benjamin also took to social media to express frustration over the situation, stating, “4hrs after arrival, still at the airport.

Also still have 2hrs drive to the hotel.” The team had been waiting for transport arrangements to be resolved, but the gates at Abraq Airport remained closed as they sought to leave for Benghazi.

This delay comes just days before the Super Eagles are set to face Libya on Tuesday, having secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg held in Uyo.

With the stakes high for qualification to next year’s AFCON in Morocco, the team’s preparation has been significantly impacted by this unforeseen circumstance. The NFF has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the steps being taken to facilitate the team’s travel to their accommodation.
