No fewer than 150 passengers are feared dead after a boat carrying over 300 people capsized in the Niger River on Independence Day.

The incident, which took place in Gwajibo village, Niger State, occurred while the vessel was en route to a Maulid Nabbiy celebration.

Eyewitnesses report a scene of chaos and despair as rescuers scramble to locate survivors amidst the debris.

A local fisherman, who requested anonymity, recounted the harrowing moments: “We saw the boat struggling against the waves, and then it suddenly overturned. It was heart-wrenching to watch.”

This tragedy marks yet another devastating chapter in Nigeria’s alarming history of boat accidents. Just last month, 40 individuals lost their lives when a boat capsized in Zamfara State’s Bakin Kasuwa River.

Furthermore, in August, four people drowned in Sokoto State’s Wamakko local government area, and a separate incident in June claimed over 100 lives as mourners returned from a marriage ceremony in the neighbouring Niger State.

“We cannot continue to lose lives in this manner,” said a Niger State government representative. “We must implement better safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.”

As the community mourns this latest loss, families of the victims are left grappling with the aftermath of a celebration turned deadly.

Rescuers remain hopeful for more survivors, but the grim reality of the situation casts a long shadow over the festivities.
