Atiku Advocates Rail Transportation for Fuel Following Jigawa Tragedy

In the wake of a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, which has reportedly claimed more than 100 lives, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Nigerian government to consider rail transport as a safer alternative for fuel distribution across the country.

Expressing his sorrow over the tragedy, Atiku took to social media platform X, stating, “I am saddened by reports of the death of scores of people in a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town.”

He emphasized that incidents of this nature have become alarmingly frequent in Nigeria, adding, “The incident in Jigawa is one too many involving tragic petrol tanker explosions in the country.”

Atiku called for a comprehensive review of current transportation methods, advocating for the use of railways to mitigate future risks.

“It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country,” he stated.

The former PDP presidential candidate also highlighted the need for improved safety protocols, suggesting that the government implement rigorous training for drivers responsible for transporting hazardous materials.

“It is also pertinent to train drivers involved in the transportation of flammable products and review the protocol for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable products,” he remarked.

Atiku extended his condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Jigawa State, urging for swift rescue operations. “No resource should be spared in treating the injured,” he added, while also praying for the eternal rest of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
