The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to eradicating extortion, corruption, and impunity among its ranks.

This declaration came during the commissioning of the Rivers State Police Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) office in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the IGP, Assistant Inspector General of Police Adebola Hamzat emphasized that the Force aims to align with public expectations for better policing.

“We have zero tolerance for extortion and corruption. The people whose taxes pay our salaries should not endure harassment from police officers,” Hamzat stated.

Egbetokun noted that while public perception often highlights issues of misconduct, the police are actively addressing complaints through established channels.

“Cases of misconduct reported to the police are duly addressed, though there has been a lack of feedback to the public,” he explained.

The CRU, established in 2015, is designed to facilitate public reporting of police misconduct while maintaining the anonymity of complainants.

“This initiative provides necessary protection for those fearful of retribution,” Egbetokun added, emphasizing the need for an accessible feedback mechanism.

In support of these efforts, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s representative in Nigeria, Cheikh Toure, praised the establishment of the CRU, aligning it with international standards for effective policing and human rights protection.

“The CRU is essential for building trust between the police and the community,” Toure said.
