Five Killed in Fiery Bus Accident on Ebonyi Highway

At least five people lost their lives early Friday morning in Ebonyi State when a bus caught fire on the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.

The incident occurred around 12:20 AM near the G-hostel junction in Abakaliki.

According to police spokesperson Joshua Ụkandu, the bus, which had just entered the state, collided with obstacles placed on the road by a maintenance team working on reconstruction. This collision led to the vehicle igniting almost immediately.

Mr. Ụkandu confirmed the fatalities, stating that five passengers were burnt beyond recognition, while seven others suffered severe burns and have been rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital for treatment.

He emphasized the need for increased awareness regarding road conditions, noting, “The driver may not have been aware of the obstacles and lost control.”
