Over 700,000 Homes Electrified Across Six Geopolitical Zones – REA

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has announced a significant achievement in its renewable energy initiatives, reporting 147,000 connections that benefit approximately 700,000 homes nationwide.

Doris Uboh, Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund at REA, disclosed these figures during the signing of a memorandum of understanding with key agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, aimed at enhancing energy access across the country.

“So far, REA has completed and commissioned 79 mini-grids across the nation. We have electrified over 700,000 homes through mini-grid and solar home system provisions, deploying a total of 222,580 solar home systems nationwide. We have achieved over 147,000 connections and created nearly 4,000 jobs,” Uboh stated.

This announcement underscores the growing impact of renewable energy solutions in Nigeria, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director and CEO of REA, emphasized the necessity of collective action to tackle the country’s electricity issues.

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, highlighted the critical role of reliable electricity in supporting national security operations. Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, noted the potential of solar power to enhance police capabilities.

Femi Akinyelure, head of the Project Management Unit for the Nigeria Electrification Project, reaffirmed REA’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, indicating a collaborative approach to resolving Nigeria’s energy crisis.
