The Ogun State Government has taken decisive action against a teacher at Obada Grammar School, following the tragic death of a student who reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained from severe corporal punishment.

Master Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, was hospitalized for ten days after allegedly being subjected to 162 frog jumps and 24 strokes of the cane, as punishment ordered by the school principal.

Reports indicate that the punishment was imposed after Arijo criticized the school’s use of student funds for a dustbin purchase.

In a statement released on the Ogun State Ministry of Education’s official X page, the government confirmed the suspension of the teacher, Amzadjo Elijah, pending further investigation.

The principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been queried for her role in permitting the punishment, which contravenes established regulations regarding corporal punishment in educational institutions.

“The incident, which occurred last Friday, has prompted immediate action to ensure accountability,” the statement read. “The principal has been given 24 hours to provide an explanation for her decision to allow such punitive measures, and why disciplinary actions should not be imposed upon her.”

The government expressed its condolences to Arijo’s family, describing the deceased as an “exceptional learner” whose loss will be felt deeply by his peers and the community.

“We pray for the strength of the family to bear this irreplaceable loss and assure them that justice will be pursued,” the statement added.
