FG to enrol additional 5m pupils to daily feeding programme by 2023 – Minister

Hajiya Sadiya Umar- Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, has said that the Federal Government is seeking to enrol about five million pupils into the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) by 2023.

Farouq said this during a meeting with stakeholders concerning the enumeration of beneficiaries and scaling up of the NHGSFP in Zamfara.

In a statement signed by Halima Oyelade, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Corporate Communications, the minister said that over 9 million people are benefiting from the NHGSFP plan daily.

She said, “Over nine million pupils are benefitting from one free nutritious meal a day during school term nationwide. Now, we have the mandate to reach an additional five million pupils by 2023.”

The minister also expressed that the program provides ample potential for socio-economic development, saying that 200,000 culinarians and farmers are currently participating in the value chain.

The minister thanked the Zamfara government for its commitment to the project and encouraged stakeholders to continue to push the project forward.

Farouq explained that the NHGSFP aims to provide one nutritious meal to all pupils in public primary schools from classes one to three. According to her, the feeding project, among others, was commissioned by the Buhari administration to combat poverty in the country.
