BREAKING: Former NASRDA DG, Seidu Mohammed is dead

The former Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA), Prof. Seidu Onailo Mohammed,  is dead.

It was gathered that the DG died in the early hours of Monday at a private hospital in Abuja. It is not clear what led to his death, but sources said he was still hale and hearty as of Saturday when he was said to have attended an event in Abuja.

A statement by Dr. Felix Ale, Head, Media & Corporate Communications, NARSDA said the sad demise took place on Monday after a brief illness.

Mohammed served as the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Space Agency between 2008 and 2019.

As a distinguished scholar, he carved a niche for himself in the community of Space Practice in Nigeria, Africa, and across the globe.

The  Space Scientist who was born on the 17th of August 1960 in the ancient town of Abejukolo in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State obtained his Ph.D. in Environmental Remote Sensing from Bayero University, Kano.

He had earlier bagged an M.Sc. degree in Soil Survey /Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System from International Institute for Geo-information and Earth Observation (ITC) Twente University, Enschede, The Netherlands where he studied as a European Economic Commission Scholar.

According to NARSDA, Professor Mohammed had to his credit over 40 research publications in local and international journals and was a board member of the International Academy of Astronautics.

“He rose through the ranks to become the second substantive Director–General of the National Space Research and Development Agency where he served meritoriously until the expiration of his two-term tenure in 2019.

“In appreciation of his leadership qualities and enviable track record of achievements during his service years, Professor Mohammed received several awards from various bodies, institutions, and organizations both in and outside the country. And back home in Kogi State, he was conferred with one of the highest traditional titles as the Ogah-Attah Igala by the paramount ruler and prescribed authority of the Igala Kingdom, The Attah Igala.

He was until his death an active politician and prominent member of the All Progressive Congress in Kogi State.
