An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Emeason Chima, has been abducted by gunmen in Nsukka, Enugu State.

Chima, who is stationed at the Ugbokolo unit (RS4.211) of the agency, was reportedly kidnapped on Saturday near Maduka University along the Nsukka-Enugu Road.

According to a senior FRSC officer, the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N50 million for his release. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said Chima was alone in his car when the attackers struck.

An internal memo from the FRSC confirmed the abduction, stating that the kidnappers used the victim’s phone to make their demands.

“The Command is in receipt of information about the kidnap of SRMA Emeason Chima,” said Emmanuel Al-Hassan, the Ugbokolo unit commander, in the memo.

“Location of incident: After Maduka University, along the Nsukka-Enugu Road via Opi Junction, Enugu State. Initial reports indicate that the officer was driving a Toyota saloon car alone at the time of the incident.

“The unit commander has been contacted by the kidnappers through the officer’s phone, with a ransom demand of N50 million. Further developments will be communicated as events unfold. This is for your information and guidance, sir,” the memo added.

The South-East region has recently experienced rising insecurity, with non-state actors frequently targeting both government personnel and security operatives.

Kidnappings for ransom have become more common, with some victims tragically killed even after payments were made. Government officials, law enforcement personnel, and other individuals have increasingly become the focus of these violent attacks.

The Nigerian government has accused the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), of orchestrating many of the violent incidents in the region, though the group continues to deny any involvement in such activities.
