The Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, is proactively educating its members on the safe use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a fuel alternative.

This initiative follows the unveiling of 3,000 CNG commercial tricycles worth N10.2 billion by the National Union of Road Transport Workers on October 16, aimed at alleviating transport challenges in the state.

Zonal Chairman Alhaji Azeez Istijabah on Tuesday emphasized the importance of safety measures during operations. “Though there are economic advantages in converting petrol tricycles to gas, there are precautionary measures needed to operate effectively,” he stated.

He specifically warned operators against smoking or engaging in activities involving naked flames, noting that “anything gas is highly inflammable.”

In addition to safety from fire hazards, Istijabah advised members to avoid overloading their tricycles, urging them to limit passengers to three per trip and not allow anyone in the front seat.

He said, “Overloading the tricycles is very dangerous; operators need to be very careful and take cognizance of various precautionary measures.”

Branch chairman in Abule-Egba, Mr. AbdulAkeem Sabiu, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial relief that the CNG initiative could provide amidst rising petrol costs.

“Many of the operators are lamenting the high cost of petrol. The new cheaper CNG initiatives by the Federal Government will bring succour to the transporters and commuters,” he said.

Sabiu also called on both the Federal and Lagos State governments to establish easily accessible CNG refilling stations. He expressed concern that tricycles are currently prohibited from operating in the Agidingbi area, where one such refilling station exists.

“We want the government to create easy access for us to enable us to refill our tricycles with ease,” he urged.
