Crowds of bank customers on Thursday thronged different commercial banks to “empty their accounts” on a day before the controversial deadline day of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The CBN Governor Mr. Godwin Emefiele had announced February 10, 2023, for the last day of old note circulation. The said date has raised eyebrows among stakeholders and government position occupants and was overruled on Wednesday by the Supreme Court, temporarily stopping the withdrawal of old Naira Notes from February 10 by the apex bank.
A seemingly countering action sprang up as Buhari met Emefiele inside AsoVilla and made undisclosed deliberations.
Today, in dramatic twists, bank customers are emptying their bank accounts for cash, according to findings in some parts of Lagos.

At two banks by Seven-and-eight Bus Stop, leading to Airport Road, a trader, Michael PSAs said he was tired of banking as transfers have been falling through and ATMs were not dispensing cash.
“I’m tired of everything. I don’t want bank again. I’ll withdraw all my money today so I can be free. I can’t access my money. Since yesterday now, four customers have transferred to me, which only one entered.”
Another young man, Akin Owoyemi said he has transferred all his money to Opay mobile banking.
Owoyemi lamented saying” This stress is much and it’s already affecting one’s health. Yesterday, I was here for six hours. Now I’m here again to see the long queues. I have transferred all my money to Opay. I want little cash because tomorrow is the deadline. They said we shouldn’t worry but, just to be safe.”
A woman, Mrs. Audu Precious, while responding to why she’s out in the morning in a huge queue, despite the teeming crowd said she’s yet to pay her kids’ tuition.
“I’m not happy at all this is the third day. I’ve been to other branches which are closed.”
“The school people are not taking it easy. If I don’t get cash today it won’t be easy. My husband has transferred, but they haven’t been credited. I’ve written a letter and this is the second week, there is no solution.”
Our correspondent observed as some customers sat on the floor in dejection, frustration, and pessimism.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has taken a decision to obey the ruling of the Supreme Court suspending the February 10 deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN on the exchange of naira notes.
The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami however said that the Federal Government was hopeful that the ex parte ruling which expires on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, would be upturned.
