The recent hike in fuel prices has turned many hitherto noisy neighbourhoods into serene community. This is because many have resorted to enduring the darkness than paying the high price for filling the empty tanks of their generators.

It is common knowledge that the state of power supply in Nigeria is poor but people have always managed to cope with it because of generators. However, as fuel prices reach record highs, fewer people are able to enjoy the luxury of turning on their generators in the event of a power outage.

The average medium-sized generator has a fuel tank capacity of 15 litres. Prior to May 29, 2023, before Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in as President, fuel was being sold at about N180-N200 per litre.

A full tank of an average generator costs N2700-N3000. At the current rate of N565 in Lagos, a full tank now costs N8,475 and in Abuja where the current rate is N617, it would cost N9255.

The new cost is out of reach for many Nigerians who now have to either ration the use of their generators more than ever before or completely discontinue its use.

“I have packed up my generator and it is now inside my house. I don’t use it anymore” says Gideon.

“There hasn’t been light in my area for four days now but I can only put on my gen for a few minutes each day to quickly charge my devices but that’s all” says Christiana

The buzz of generators in neighbourhoods and estates without power supply has been replaced with eerie silence and complete darkness.

The fuel price hike is as a result of the removal of subsidy by President Tunubu on May 29, 2023.
