Commuters plying the Lagos-Ibadan expressway route have decried heavy traffic congestion which has seen vehicles remain at a standstill since the early house of Wednesday.

Footage of the standstill circulating on social media on Wednesday afternoon showed agitated commuters voicing their frustrations with the traffic situation along Magboro-Kara inward Lagos.

Some claimed to have spent over 8 hours on the axis—a distance that should take about 42 minutes to cover under normal conditions.

“I left home since 4:00 AM and I am still stuck between Magboro and Kara,” one commuter said in the video.

In the video, some vehicles could be seen using bush paths and dirt trails to attempt to circumnavigate the terrible traffic.

Although construction is currently ongoing along that axis, there has been no official confirmation of the cause of the gridlock.

Other social media users took to their accounts to share their ordeal.

Facebook user Obafemi Paul said he spent hours on the route and called the long bridge a “no-go area”.

“I spent 6 hours from Magboro to Berger today, we still have a long way to go in traffic management Inward and outward movement via the long bridge is a no-go area for now.

“I hear Lagos is in chaos. 6 hours stand still traffic at Berger. Omo… Love and Light to all of you occupants of Sanwo Olu’s mega city,” Twitter user @PK_Motions said.

Around 12:45 pm on Wednesday, another Twitter user @_VCENT advised commuters to avoid the route.

“If you have plans of entering Lagos today via the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, abort it. If you are on the road already just prepare to take a bike to Berger from where the traffic meets you. And if u are driving, well just start buying food that will be enough for you till tonight and tomorrow,” the user tweeted.

The Lagos-Ibadan expressway route is a major road for travellers and commuters entering and exiting Lagos by road and has been notorious for causing heavy traffic congestion.

Just last week, an accident involving a fallen truck on the Otedola bridge (inward Berger) caused a standstill.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency had later cleared the wreckage hours after the accident occurred.

State authorities are yet to officially comment on Wednesday’s extreme traffic situation.
