Heavy Rainfall Floods Lagos Highways, Drivers, School Owners Advised To Exercise Patience (See Photos)

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has sent  warnings to residents and school proprietors to take extra precautions as rainfall persists in Lagos.

South West coordinator of the agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, said in a statement on Thursday that the rainfall began in the early hours of the morning and is still ongoing.

As a result, school proprietors and teachers have been advised to keep children under their care until 30 minutes after the rainfall stops, to avoid the risk of playing in rainwater on their way home.

According to the statement, flashing flooding is expected to occur during the rainfall, which is expected to last no more than 30 minutes.

Drivers have also been warned to exercise patience on highways, which have been blocked as a result of the heavy rainfall.

“Residents of Lagos State are enjoined to take utmost precautions to avoid dangers as a result of torrential rainfall being witnessed presently.

“The rainfall which started at about 0011 hours is still on.

“School proprietors and teachers are highly advised to keep the children under their custody till 30 minutes after the rainfall before the children should be released .

“This is to safeguard the children from playing in the rainwater on their way home.
After the flashing flooding, which will not last beyond 30 minutes, it will be safe for the children to find their way home.

“Drivers are hereby warned to exercise patient as highways have being blocked.
People should avoid taking refuge in a makeshift shelter as the place can be washed off by floods.”
