As the ongoing 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination enters its second day, there has been some remarkable improvement in the exercise compared with the first day of the exam held last Saturday, according to our correspondent’s report.

Reports from some venues of the exam in Lagos as observed by our correspondent showed that the UTME, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, went on without hitches. For example, a visit to the WAEC International Office in Agidingbin, Lagos, showed that the candidates were well organised, well behaved and orderly.

Our correspondent observed that candidates that were yet to sit for the exam sat quietly in the place provided for them, eagerly waiting for their turn. The senior supervisor at the venue, Mr. Kaseem Oluwatomi, described the exercise as smooth, adding that there were no cases of malfunctioning computers at the centre. Similarly, the invigilator said the candidates were well-behaved and that there were no cases of exam malpractice.

A total of 250 candidates were booked for each of the sessions of the exam at the centre. As of the time our correspondent visited the centre, the second set of candidates had almost finished the exam. Of the two sets, a total of 15 candidates did not sit for the exam. Out of this figure, four came late while the remaining 11 failed to turn up for the exam.
Recall that the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is’haq Oloyede, had assured of an “upward review and upgrading of technologies” for this year’s exercise.

He had told officers involved in the examination in a webinar briefing that “the Biometric Verification Machines (BVM) were being upgraded to forestall any (further) form of malfunction in the remaining days of the examination.

Other centres visited by correspondents in other parts of the country showed that some of the main technical problems faced on the first day of the exam had been resolved. As promised by the JAMB Registrar, two BVMs were concurrently used at the centres visited to sign-in and sign-out candidates.

Meanwhile, some parents have expressed happiness over the prompt release of the exam for candidates who sat the exam on Saturday.

An excited mother of a candidate who sat for the exam on Saturday said she was happy that she did not have to nurse any form of anxiety about her children’s performance for long as their results were released on the first working day after the exam.

Another parent, who identified herself as Mrs. Ayomide, said the process this year was better than last year’s. She urged the board to continue to improve on service delivery to the candidates.
