JUST IN: Ekweremadu paid hundreds of thousands of pounds for legal defence — Reports

Emerging information has revealed that Senator Ike Ekweremadu spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on the legal defence for him and his co-defendants in the just concluded Organ Trafficking court saga.

This was reported by Channels Television on Friday night.

Talktoalawyer reports that Ekweremadu, along with his wife Beatrice and the doctor-middleman, Obinna Obeta, 51, were on Friday sentenced to serve 10 years and 8 months, 4 years and six months, and 10 years imprisonment, respectively.

The three were found guilty at the Old Bailey of conspiring to arrange the travel of a young man with a view to exploiting him for his body part.

The Ekweremadus’ 25-year-old daughter, Sonia, has a severe kidney disease. It was for her the donor was sourced and brought to the UK.

Asides the litigation costs, the evening news programme also reported that the Senator has incurred over €1m in debt over the past few months.

Earlier in May, multiple outlets reported that Ekweremadu has continued to receive his emoluments and allowances despite being in detention since June last year.

The Africa Report confirmed that the former deputy senate leader has been receiving his monthly salary, allowance and imprest of N14.2m (about $30,800) from the Nigerian Senate since June.

So far, he has collected 12 months of salary and allowances which amounts to N170.4m (nearly $370,000).
