Lagos Govt to Provide Face Masks in Schools for Exit Classes’ Students

The Lagos State Government will make face masks available to all schools opening for students in exit classes for the duration of the reopening.

Giving an update on the coronavirus pandemic in Lagos on Saturday, the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said Secondary Schools in the state will reopen, as earlier communicated by the Ministry of Education, from August 3rd, for Exit Classes – that is, SS3 and Technical Studies TEC3 students only.

He said this will allow them two weeks to participate in revision classes and examinations in preparation for the forthcoming West African Examinations (WAEC), which will start on August 17, 2020.

“All standard precautions must be put in place by school authorities: hand-washing facilities,

physical distancing, the use of face masks, and so on. Officials of the Lagos State Government will be inspecting all qualifying schools to ensure that these requirements are fully met.

The Lagos State Government will make face masks available to all schools to which this reopening exemption applies, for the duration of the reopening.”

In a related development, the state has also commenced fumigation/decontamination of all public secondary schools, in preparation for the planned partial resumption.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Aderonke Odeneye,  in a statement on Saturday said that majority of the public secondary schools in the six educational districts had been reached.

Odeneye said the exercise was part of the resumption protocol/guidelines for the secondary schools in the state, adding that the state had continued to adopt measures to ensure that the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic was effectively contained.

“The fumigation exercise which is on-going, preparatory to resumption next week for terminal classes will continue after the West African Examination Council’s Exams. The periodic exercise which commenced in late June has been effected in all the model colleges,” she explained.

The permanent secretary urged schools’ managements to make provisions for water in their premises with a view to promoting hand washing among the students. She said that pupils must avoid all sporting activities till further notice while schools’ managements were asked to provide alcohol-based hand sanitisers in all classrooms and hostels.
