NANS Slams NECO Over ₦50,000 Certificate Reprint Fee

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has categorically rejected the ₦50,000 fee recently announced by the National Examination Council (NECO) for certificate reprints, labeling the move as an egregious commercialization of education.

This announcement was made by NECO’s Registrar, Dantani Wushishi, during a press conference in Minna, Niger State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS Clerk of the Senate, Comrade Abdulyekinn Odunayo, condemned the fee as “excessive and unfair,” highlighting the financial strains many students currently endure.

“This draconian policy is a slap in the face of Nigerian students, already beset by financial hardships and uncertainty,” Odunayo said.

He emphasized that the ₦50,000 charge would exacerbate financial exclusion, denying numerous students access to essential certificates and further entrenching educational inequality. “The ₦50,000 fee is an unacceptable burden on students, many of whom struggle to make ends meet,” he added.

NANS has also expressed concerns regarding NECO’s transparency and management of funds, urging the council to reconsider its policies. The association has proposed a significant reduction in the fee, an extension of the reprint request window to five years, and a call for a more inclusive dialogue involving student stakeholders.

Odunayo in a strong message, stating, “The National Association of Nigerian Students will not stand idly while education is commercialized and students are exploited. We demand an immediate reversal of the ₦50,000 fee and a commitment to prioritize student interests in decision-making.”

This controversy comes at a time when students are grappling with various economic challenges, raising questions about the accessibility and fairness of educational resources in Nigeria.
