Nigeria’s Minister Urges National Strategy for AI-driven Sustainable Development

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in Nigeria, Dr Bosun Tijani, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to develop a national strategy to effectively utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development.

In a document titled ‘Co-creating a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Nigeria,’ shared on his X handle, Dr Tijani highlighted that AI has become a versatile technology that can transform production and service delivery, offering great potential for economic growth and social progress.

Citing the International Finance Corporation, the Ministry of Communications revealed that the strategic implementation of AI could contribute up to $234 billion to Africa’s GDP by 2030.

However, the ministry also acknowledged that along with the opportunities, the governance of AI presents complex socio-technical challenges.

It said, “As algorithms are deployed in high-stake domains like healthcare, finance, and security, concerns are emerging around ethics, bias, transparency, job automation, and privacy. Both policymakers and researchers are of a consensus that a human-centered approach is essential to ensure Al systems are fair and accountable to all, across gender, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.”
