The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has categorically rejected Julius Abure’s leadership of the Labour Party (LP), dismissing a recent court ruling that validated his position as the party’s National Chairman.
This declaration intensifies the ongoing power struggle within the party, just as it prepares for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, Theophilus Ndubuaku, acting chairman of the NLC Political Commission, condemned the Abuja Federal High Court’s decision, asserting it fails to reflect the true will of the party’s constitution and its stakeholders.
“The NLC Political Commission views the judgement as another act of desperation and subterfuge by Mr. Julius Abure and his motley of hangers-on merchants who have no other job than to leech and parasitise on the goodwill of the Labour Party,” Ndubuaku stated.
This controversy erupted after Justice Emeka Nwite ruled on October 8, 2024, affirming the legality of the Labour Party’s national convention held in Nnewi in March 2024.
Following the ruling, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognized Abure and the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC).

However, Ndubuaku has accused Abure of undermining the party’s stability and of acting on behalf of external interests. He expressed disappointment that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) were not parties to the court proceedings, questioning the legitimacy of the ruling.

“It is queer that the Nigeria Labour Congress, which together with the Trade Union Congress are the only statutory bodies recognized in the Labour Party Constitution, were not joined as parties to the two court processes filed by Mr. Abure,” he lamented.
Ndubuaku reiterated that Abure’s leadership is not accepted by party members, emphasizing that the fight for justice and democracy will persist.
“No matter how many court rulings there are, Julius Abure will never be accepted as the leader by Labour Party members,” he affirmed.
