The National Open University of Nigeria has enrolled 615 prisoners students ready to study to the doctoral level, even as the institution postpones its convocation ceremony scheduled for Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21.

According to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Abdalla Adamu, the postponement was as a result of the Corona Virus ravaging the world and the need to contain its spread, explaining that NOUN would pay the students’ prisoners fees up to the Ph.D level.

The VC said the prisoners’ major course of study is Peace and Conflict Resolution, adding that the institution’s focus is to encourage the prisoners to acquire education and be useful on re-integration into the society.

He also said the institution is willing to admit people with learning disabilities. He said, “We do not want a situation where people with so-called learning disabilities are separated from the society. If anybody with a learning disability wishes to enroll in NOUN, he is welcomed.”

He further stated that though NOUN does not have Braille books in its library, blind students could be introduced to other technology enhanced items. “We are living in an inclusive world, we want these people to be part of the society, so we integrate them as much as we can,” the VC said.
