Only 21 out of the 274 universities in Nigeria have made it onto the latest global university rankings, highlighting a troubling trend in the country’s higher education sector.

Prof. Moses Idowu, an expert in Ecclesiastical Theology and Human Development, voiced his concerns, attributing the low rankings to pervasive misgovernance and maladministration in Nigerian universities.

Idowu noted that only Covenant University and Landmark University, both affiliated with the Living Faith Tabernacle and led by Bishop David Oyedepo, ranked within the top tiers, specifically Bands A and B.

He lamented that no federal or state university made it into the top 1,000, with Covenant University being the only institution listed in Band A, while four others, including the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, fell into Band B.

He expressed disappointment, stating, “This is an emblem of national shame, a tragic reflection of misgovernance not only of our universities but of the Nigerian nation as a whole.”

Idowu emphasized that it was particularly disheartening for a private institution to outperform historic federal universities, underscoring a drastic decline in educational standards.
