Osinachi: late singer’s husband appears in court for murder

A 23-count charge including murder has been slammed on Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late popular gospel artiste, Osinachi, after spending weeks in detention, for allegedly having a hand in the death of the prolific singer, through domestic violence.

Apart from culpable homicide, which is murder other charges against Nwachukwu, a native of Ukpor in Nnewi-South LGA, Anambra State, before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Wuse on Friday, also include: culpable homicide, verbal, physical abuse, and wrongful confinement, wrongful restraint, economic abuse, forced isolation, emotional and psychological abuse and attempt to commit culpable homicide, among others.

The case is being pursued by the Federal Government, after a general outcry in the country over the death of the prolific golden voice, who was the Lead Singer with the musical group of the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, in Abuja.

According to the PUNCH, the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, who confirmed the development, said that Nwachukwu would be arraigned before Court 56, FCT High Court, Wuse.

The death of Osinachi, 42, on April 8 after spending days at a hospital, not only sparked outrage across the country and beyond, but further brought to the fore the issues of domestic violence, which had remained a burning issue in the country.

Several revelations, from children, family members, and friends of gory details of mindless physical abuse of the lady, nailed the accused, which led to his arrest by the police, who have been detaining him in Abuja, since then.

His case marked as charge number, CR/199/2022, was filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on May 20, 2022, by the Head, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Yewande Gbola-Awopetun.

Charged under Sections 104 and 379 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, he was specifically accused of forcefully ejecting the deceased from the family home, contrary to the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, and attempted culpable homicide by pushing Osinachi out of a moving vehicle.

He was also alleged to have deprived the deceased of her liberty by restraining her movement and locking her up in the house.
