Edward, who is 11 months old, is one of 65 newborns born in England each year with severe spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a condition in which he lacks a protein required for muscle development.

He was given the £1.79 million Zolgensma gene therapy, which has been proved to let babies breathe without the use of a ventilator, sit up on their own, crawl, and walk after just one treatment.

“Edward has a very bright future ahead of him,” his mother Megan said after more than a year of pushing. He’s the ideal baby and a very content little boy.” “We’ve been fighting for this medicine for a long time. I’m in a state of shock; I can’t believe the day has arrived.”
