The political crisis in Rivers State deepened on Monday as the pro-Wike faction of the State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, gave Governor Siminalayi Fubara a 7-day ultimatum to resubmit the 2024 budget for review.

This directive came after the faction held its first session in several months, convening at the State Assembly quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Meanwhile, a parallel session was held by the faction led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, loyal to Governor Fubara, at an improvised chamber in the Government House.

The pro-Fubara lawmakers had previously passed the budget estimates, which the governor signed into law, aiming to foster economic development, inclusive growth, and reduce socio-economic inequality in the state.

The pro-Wike faction’s ultimatum is a direct challenge to Governor Fubara’s authority, as the political standoff between the two factions continues to escalate.

The crisis has raised concerns about the governance and development of Rivers State, with many calling for a resolution to the impasse.
