The Federal Government has been urged to authorise security companies protecting university campuses across the country to carry arms as soon as possible to ensure adequate protection of both people and material resources within the institutions.

Muhammed Ibrahim, the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, made the call during the  meeting of the union’s  zonal executive council.

With the country’s current security situation, he said, the government is required to immediately prepare plans to educate university security employees on weapons handling, as that may be the only choice for the safety of both academic and non-academic staff as well as students on campus.

According to him, allowing security guards to carry weapons on campuses has become unavoidable since it is the only way to prevent hoodlums from entering schools to commit mayhem.

“The federal government should provide our security agents legal authority to carry weapons in the event of an assault.

“We are stating this because our community as universities is no longer safe to walk around the campuses, and even those staying outside have similar concerns. Our security team is led by ex-army or police personnel, so they are not new to these techniques, but we are handicapped.

“It’s distressing to watch how these criminals enter onto our campuses, abduct our students, and collect ransom without fear of being caught.”
