The University of Lagos management’s token reduction in fees has been met with dissatisfaction by the students solidarity group against fee hike.

In a statement released today, the group expressed their disappointment, considering the reduction to be insignificant and lacking in scientific basis.

They also highlighted the recurring mistakes made by the Professor Folashade-led management, expressing concern over the administration’s inability to find effective solutions to simple problems.

Furthermore, the statement emphasized the Students Solidarity Group’s role as the leading force in advocating for students’ rights.

They have actively engaged in issuing press statements and organizing mass actions, including an ongoing referendum conducted by a task force committee established after the management’s fee reduction announcement.

The group called on the government and university administrations to listen to the students’ demands and take immediate action to reverse the fee hike.

They emphasized the importance of a fair and accessible higher education system for the future of Nigeria.

Students at UNILAG have achieved several victories and concessions through intense struggle, according to a recent press conference held by the UNILAG Students’ Union.

These victories include a reduction in fees and the promise to restore the University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU).

However, the students emphasized that these achievements were not due to the benevolence of the university’s management, but rather the result of their own efforts, with support from the media and concerned Nigerians.

The students have successfully forced a reduction in fees and initiated discussions about reinstating the Students’ Union.

They have also exposed various instances of criminal extortion, such as faculty fees and the laundering of Sodeinde Hall fees into an unknown account.

Additionally, the students have recently compelled the management to rescind a policy that prohibited the provision of mattresses.

Despite these victories, the students acknowledge that their struggle is far from over, which is why they called for the press conference.

They believe it is crucial to engage in meaningful dialogue with the public to address their ongoing concerns and explore potential solutions.

The students remain committed to fighting for a democratic and fair resolution that promotes accessible and affordable education in Nigeria.

The statement read in part, “As we resume, we urge students to follow religiously all activities as organized by the solidarity group. Some of which are-

1. A physical Congress on campus will be called in the coming days upon resumption to discuss all welfare issues including the hiked fees and actions that are needed to be taken to safeguard our interests as students.

2. The Congress shall take into cognizance the importance of organizing for a vibrant Students’ Union. We wish to state that we will not wait for the management to ‘teleguide’ our Union. It is called a Students’ Union and not Management Union, for a reason.

3. Solidarity meetings with Staff Unions shall be duly held.

4. Solidarity meetings with civil society organizations, to further deepen the struggle will also take place.”
