Students vow to shut down Nigeria’s economy in protest against school closure

The National Association of University Students ( NAUS) National Association of Polytechnic Students ( NAPS) and National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education (NANCE)  have threatened to shut down the economy if government refuses to reopen tertiary institutions.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday during the nationwide protest  against the continued closure of tertiary institutions in the country,  the aggrieved students said that the continued closure of schools showed  the insensitivity of the nation’s leadership to education and the plight of students .

Senate President, National Association of Polytechnic Students, Oghale Emeka Rex, who spoke  at the Ministry of Education in Abuja, said with the re-opening of markets, worship centres and international flights, there was no basis for the continued closure of tertiary institutions.

He said the Federal Government was playing with the future of Nigerian students, adding  that many students have been victimised sexually and others murdered due to school closure.

He said, “The age limit for national service is 30 years and most of us are 29, if it continues like this, at the end of the day, we will not be mobilised  for NYSC.  We will shut down the country if they refuse to reopen  schools.”

Similarly, a former Zone A Coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Students, Umar Farouk, urged the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19  to immediately reopen  tertiary institutions.
