A human rights event hosted by Vive Chancellor of  the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folashade Ogunsola has ignited a firestorm of criticism from the Students’ Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike (SSGAFH).

The group, in a scathing press release, accused the university administration of “clandestinely” organizing the event and engaging in “blatant hypocrisy.”

The SSGAFH pointed to the stark contradiction between Professor Ogunsola’s supposed stance on human rights and the university’s track record of suppressing student activism and silencing dissent.

They highlighted the suspension of the Student Union for over seven years, the rustication of students for speaking out against injustice, and the recent clampdown on protests against the astronomical fee hike as examples of UNILAG’s disregard for basic human rights.

Furthermore, the SSGAFH questioned the timing of the event, held while a student activist was allegedly being harassed and threatened by the Head of Department for questioning the sale of lab manuals.

They also condemned the university’s “raining queries” on progressive lecturers who “allow” students to ask critical questions about their welfare and academics.

In light of this context, the SSGAFH urged Professor Ogunsola to stay away from human rights advocacy and “dissassociate” from figures like Femi Falana SAN, Seun Kuti, and Ayo Obe, whose reputations in the field are “unquestionable.” The group also demanded an immediate stop to the victimization of student activists and progressive lecturers.

Failing to address these concerns, the SSGAFH warned of “massive protests” and the continuation of their campaign for affordable education with the slogan “#FeesMustFall.”
