The Chancellor of the Rivers State University (RSU), retired Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad 1, has regretted the declining value system in the country.

He said that has also affected the country’s quality of education.

Speaking, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, at the 34th Convocation of the institution, Muhammad 1 said such decline was evidenced in poor national orientation, lack of enduring welfare system and general lack of attention to the youths.

He observed the unquenchable desire among Nigerian youths to relocate abroad, a phenomenon that has become a major national threat and an indicator of a bleak future for Nigeria.

Speaking also, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, charged the institution to be ready to benchmark its academic programmes to meet global demands, considering the fast-changing world that “demands a corresponding change in education standards.”

Wike, who was conferred with the Honorary Doctor of Laws LL.D (Honoris Causa) insisted that the university must move away from the existing academic model of processing of graduates in their numbers, after every four or five years, unmindful of the quality of knowledge and skills imparted.

He maintained that RSU could not be rated high and respected globally, unless it could link education with “cutting-edge research that creates new knowledge and innovation that converts ideas into wealth creation, jobs and human progress.”
