For a very long time, many Nigerians have always had the impression that education courses are only for those who are not brilliant enough, as many who feel they are academically sounded attempt to pursue courses in other fields apart from education. To attract the best brains into the teaching profession, the Federal Government recently approved the payment of a stipend per semester for students pursuing degrees in education at Nigerian public universities.
These stipend payments could be for both Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor degree students. Malam Adamu, the Minister of Education, made the announcement on Tuesday at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Eagle Square, Abuja.

This announcement by the Minister could, however, make many people pursue education courses for these reasons.

Payment of stipends
Presently, there is no course in Nigeria that students receive any stipend for pursuing except being on scholarship. Getting 50,000 Naira as an NCE student and 75,000 Naira as a degree student per semester in an education field will encourage many young, brilliant minds to consider the teaching profession as they will be able to earn while studying rather than go for other courses that they will get nothing for studying. This amount will be able to help most of the students till they graduate from their program and relieve parents from having to constantly find money to send their children who are in school.

Opportunity for automatic employment after graduation
In the announcement, it was made known that there would be a collaboration with the different Nigerian states to automatically employ the education students upon graduation. This attempt will make many sound-minded young Nigeria love pursuing the teaching profession since there is assurance that a job will be made instantly available to them after graduation. No course in Nigeria has been given this privilege. Even those on the medical course are not opportune for automatic employment as they need to look for jobs themselves.

If the government can successfully make these promises come into reality, many Nigerian students will forgo other courses and prefer to be a teacher.
