The Igbimo Asoju Yoruba has called on all peaceful Nigerians to take their personal securities seriously and avoid being complacent at this very period until the resolution of the 2023 elections.
A statement by George Olufemi Ogunjimi, the President of the group on Sunday, said it was clear that Nigeria is no longer the same country we all knew before as people of shady characters have infiltrated the populace and have bequeathed a culture of violence on it.
“We urge citizens to avoid confrontations at these very moments and advise those who feel unsafe to live and carry on businesses in the far North to urgently relocate to the South in furtherance of their trades and preservation of their lives.
“Inasmuch as we are disappointed in the reluctance of the security agencies and government of the Federation in nipping the bud of violence and terrorism across the country and especially in the far North, we must continue to urge our people to be law-abiding and avoid taking laws in their own hands.
“We are at the threshold of accusing our elected government officials of complicity in many grievous crimes against the citizens because of their criminal silence, and silence and refusing to act appropriately can be construed as consensual participation.
“We further reinforce the stance of the Sothern Gorvernors’ Forum that the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must emerge from the southern part of the country and urge all well-meaning citizens to support this onerous call,” the statement read.
The group also called on Nigerians to defend their voting and other rights accordingly and appropriately within the ambit of laws.
“To this end, while we commiserate with the family of Deborah Yakubu for her senseless and callous murder by her colleagues on the alter of reckless and spurious allegations, we call on the government of Sokoto State to move speedily at arriving at justice for the deceased and many other victims.
“Life is a creation of God and if we profess to abide by His rules, we must endeavour to protect it by all means except by an order of the judiciary.
“We are on earth to co-exist unless we decide otherwise,” the statement added.
