In a recent release of the 2023 UTME application statistics, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has provided insights into the preferred choices of Nigerian students for admission into various universities. The data reveals the top ten institutions based on the total number of applications received, giving us a glimpse into the preferences of aspiring students.

Topping the list is the University of Ilorin, located in Ilorin, Kwara State, which received an impressive total of 73,749 applications. This makes up 4.62% of the overall applications. The University of Ilorin has consistently held the first position in the past three years as well, showcasing its popularity among applicants.

Following closely in the second position is the University of Lagos, situated in Lagos State, with 61,606 applications, representing 3.86% of the total. The university has maintained its prominence as the second most preferred choice for students for the second consecutive year.

In the third position, we have the Lagos State University in Ojo, Lagos State, which received 55,954 applications, accounting for 3.51% of the overall applications. It is noteworthy that the university did not feature in the top ten list in the previous three years, indicating a significant rise in its popularity among prospective students.

The Federal University in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, secures the fourth spot with 53,235 applications, constituting 3.34% of the total. The university has shown consistent growth, moving up from the sixth position in 2022 and seventh position in 2021.

The University of Benin in Benin City, Edo State, takes the fifth position, receiving 48,026 applications, equivalent to 3.01% of the overall applications. Although it dropped from the third position in 2021, the university remains a popular choice for students seeking quality education.

In the sixth position, we have the University of Nigeria located in Nsukka, Enugu State. It received 43,660 applications, accounting for 2.74% of the total. The university has witnessed a rise in popularity, moving up from the eighth position in 2022.

Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, secured the seventh spot with 41,959 applications, making up 2.63% of the total. It maintained its position from the previous year and has also shown improvement compared to its ninth position in 2021 and eighth position in 2020.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, ranks eighth in the list, receiving 41,759 applications, representing 2.62% of the total. Despite a slight drop from its third position in 2022, the university remains a popular choice among applicants.

The Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, Kaduna State, enters the top ten list this year with 41,323 applications, making up 2.59% of the overall applications. The academy did not feature in the top ten list in the past three years, highlighting its growing appeal among prospective cadets.

Closing the top ten list is the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State, with 41,134 applications, equivalent to 2.58% of the total. It maintained its position from the previous year, and although it didn’t make the top ten list in 2021, it held the seventh position in 2020.

The UTME application statistics provide valuable insights into the preferences of Nigerian students and the popularity of different institutions.
