Nigerian chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, successfully completed her cook-a-thon in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
The cook-a-thon held in Lagos, which is set to last for 90 hours, started on Thursday, May 11, and was expected to end on Sunday, May 14. She exceeded all expectations when she made it to 100+ hours in the evening of Monday, May 15.
The Guinness Book of Records is a reference book that contains human and natural world records.
It was first published in 1955 by the Guinness Brewery in Ireland and has since become one of the world’s most well-known and frequently read reference books.
Individuals or groups must submit proof to the Guinness World Records team and go through a verification process to qualify for a world record listing.
Here is a list of Nigerians that have broken the Guinness World Records in recent times:

1. Fela Kuti
The late Fela Kuti holds a Guinness world record for the most studio album recordings released. He achieved this when he recorded 46 albums as a solo artist over the course of a solo career that lasted for 23 years.
2. Wizkid
Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid has a Guinness World Record for being the artist with the first track to reach one billion streams on Spotify. Wizkid achieved this with One Dance by Drake (Canada) which featured him and Kyla, on December 16, 2016.
3. Lauritta Onye
The farthest shot put by a female F40 athlete is 8.40 m, achieved by Lauritta Onye at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 11 September 2016.
4. Bose Omolayo
Bose Omolayo achieved a Guinness World Record in 2021 when she did the heaviest para power lift by a female in the -79 kg category at 144 kg (317 lb 7 oz).
5. Rema
In 2023, Rema became the first artist to top the Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) charts. With this feat, Rema set a new Guinness Book of Records.
6. Chinonso Eche
Chinonso Eche, also known as “Amazing Kid Eche” holds the Guinness world record for most football (soccer ball) headers in a prone position in one minute (233). He did this in 2021.
The young lad also holds the Guinness world record for the fastest time to 1,000 football (soccer ball) touches while balancing a ball on the head. He did this in 7 min 46 sec on 13 October 2021.
This amazing kid also earned another Guinness World Record for the most consecutive football (soccer) touches in one minute while balancing a football on the head which was (111).
7. Vincent Okezie
The most consecutive backwards handsprings with a football (soccer ball) between the legs is 10, achieved by Vincent Okezie (Nigeria), in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, on 11 March 2022.
8. Kaffy
Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau popularly known by her stage name Kaffy, is a Nigerian dancer, choreographer, dance instructor and fitness coach. She broke the Guinness World Record for “Longest Dance Party” at the Nokia Silverbird Danceathon in 2006.
9. DJ Yin
Nigerian Disc Jockey Oyinka Asu-Johnson professionally known as DJ Yin broke the World Record for the longest Dj set on October 2021.
She broke the record by operating her set for 243 hours, 30 minutes, at The Grill by Yanna, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The record was previously held by a Nigerian, DJ Obi, when he performed for 230 hours at the Sao Cafe in Lagos, Nigeria.
10. Paul Kehinde
In December 2018, Paul Kehinde set a Guinness World Record for the heaviest para power lift by a male in the -65 kg category 221 kg (487 lb 3.5 oz). He did this after he broke his own world record of 220.5 kg, set at the World Championship in December 2017.
