The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro is a known Polytechnic In West Africa especially in the South Western Part of Nigeria. The institution was established by law on July 25, 1979, and opened its gates to the public on November 15, 1979. The Polytechnic has since then acquired the reputation of a quintessential institution educating and training students in five schools or faculties. These are Engineering, Environmental Studies, Communication and Information Technology, Management Studies and Pure and Applied Sciences.

- The founding rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro is Dr Tayo Ogunbadejo. He resumed office in 1979 and left in 1987.
- The Rector, Arc. Olusegun Olanrewaju Aluko, PhD is the 5th Rector of the Institution. He becomes the Rector of the Institution since the 2015/2016 academic session till the time of filing this report.
- The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro was established by Decree No. 33 of July 25, 1979, and the institution will be 43 this year in July.
- Ilaro Polytechnic is the second-best polytechnic in Nigeria at the time of putting up this report.
- There are five schools in this citadel of learning which are School of Engineering, Environmental Studies, Communication and Information Technology, Management Studies and Pure and Applied Sciences.
- The institution has a radio station that transmits live programmes and 90% of the programmes are run by the students in Mass Communication Department.
- The institution has zero tolerance for cultism and misconducts like cheating during examination, stealing, robbery, bullying, etc.
- The Senate has approved upgrade of Ilaro Poly to University status as it has been shown that the institution has enough facilities for the take-off of a university with less expenditure that would have been required for the establishment of a new university.
- There are two Polytechnics in Nigeria that offer Music Technology:
(a) The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro
(b) The Federal Polytechnic, Ibadan
